Mal gut, mehr schlecht. (Some good, more bad.)

“You sit in your apartment, see things surrounding you, then the light is dimmed, you see less and less, until there’s nothing left: that’s depression.” Mareike is one of nine people suffering from depression, whom photographer Nora Klein accompanied and portrayed as part of her project Mal gut, mehr schlecht.
Mental illness is omnipresent in our society. However, the concrete symptoms are often mysterious and elusive. For over a year and a half, Klein established close, trusting relationships with people suffering from depression. Nora Klein has captured a visual expression of the emotional world of depressives. Through sensitive portraits and pictorial worlds addressing emotional states such as fear, emptiness and feeling lost, the project renders an invisible disease into a visual experience. Published by Hatje Cantz Verlag, the book includes photos accompanied by conversational notes and thoughts as well as personal documents of participants.
In 2018 and 2019, the project will be presented in the form of a lecture series Germany-wide. More information: www.malgutmehrschlecht.de
