Who Are You, Death?
A long-term project by photographer Nora Klein and author Sonja Hartwig
In a world where everything is uncertain, there is one certainty we have: everything that lives will die. Death is the inevitable outcome of every life, no matter what form it takes. No one can claim they didn’t know. So let’s talk about it! That’s what author Sonja Hartwig and photographer Nora Klein do in their project “Who Are You, Death?”. Through text and images, they pose questions without succumbing to the temptation to offer universal answers. It seems presumptuous to try to portray, explain, or understand death, but that makes it all the more important to start a conversation about it. Everyday death—the kind most of us will experience—rarely features in public discourse. What does it look like, how does it feel? What do we think and feel as we approach it? “Who Are You, Death?” is a call to break the silence and a plea for a natural approach to the most natural thing in life. The book accompanying the project was published in 2025 by Hartmann Books. For more information about the project and lecture events, visit www.wer-bist-du-tod.de
